That is GANNET’s new mainsail cover. If it looks like her old cover, it is supposed to.
It was delivered late Monday afternoon. I took it down to the little sloop yesterday morning. A perfect fit. David of Island Canvas duplicated the old cover with excellent workmanship. Sometimes things go right.
In writing about changes I found on our west coast trip, I neglected to include the above.
Sea World is located close to Quivira Basin. In the past they had fireworks displays on some nights. Now they have drone shows. The photo was taken from our hotel balcony.
As you probably know the planet is experiencing the strongest El Niño on record. An El Nino is a normal recurrence of high water temperature in the Pacific Ocean, but this year’s is extreme. One of the consequences is increased tropical storms in the Pacific Ocean and decreased storms in the Atlantic.

Reading is one of the great pleasures of my life. In this it appears that I am an anachronism, as I am in other ways. I acknowledge that pictures are useful, which is why I am told by the publisher that GANNET 6 will include more than a hundred color photographs and images; but for me words are supreme, and I am having the great pleasure presently to be reading three wonderful books, all of which I have read before.
One is Nordhoff and Hall’s BOUNTY trilogy. I don’t know how they worked together, but they did so seamlessly and created as good a sea story as has ever been told.
The other two are MESSAGE by the Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa, which consists of forty-four poems loosely about Portugal’s epic maritime history. Pessoa is now considered among Portugal’s greatest poets, but MESSAGE was the only book of his published in his lifetime.
The other is ONE HUNDRED LEAVES: A NEW TRANSLATION OF THE HYAKUNIN ISSHU, which consists of one hundred short poems by one hundred different poets compiled in the 13th Century. In the book each poem is preceded by a charming full page color print.
