Evanston: right place; stemless; music for difficult times

I received the above photo from my friend, Roger, of ‘The Fish’ fame, taken from TRAVELLER off Hope Town in the Bahamas where he presently is with his wife, Laurie.  As Roger notes he is in the right place at the right time.  Social distancing with a moat.  I thank him for permission to share the photo.

I did my full workout yesterday and 21 floors of stairs.  It all was easy.  No sore muscles, which is a little surprising because I only did the workout twice on GANNET’s foredeck in February.  Today I use 10 pound weights.

It is difficult to believe that this magnificent body—well, perhaps once—is actually disabled or handicapped or visually challenged or whatever the currently political correct term is, but I am significantly blind.  As you may recall I did not renew my driver’s license and when sailing I am sure of a handhold before I move.  The greatest irritation is lack of depth perception, bumping into corners, knocking over glasses.  I knocked over a full martini glass last evening before I even had a sip.  I had just set it down on a tray that Carol and I keep between us on the living room sofa and reached for a box of Cheese-Its.  I misjudged and over went the drink.  This has happened before.  It may happen again, but not with a stemmed glass.   No more stemmed martini or wine glasses at home for this old sailor.  I have become stemless.

As previously noted Carol is working from home.  She is on the phone, video conferencing, using her computer.  She said, “It is hard working from home.”   I said, “Nonsense.  I have been doing it for decades.”

I happened upon a beautiful, tranquil and perhaps elegiac piece of music written by Max Richter, titled ‘Return 2’.  The video is apposite.  I offer you sixteen minutes of calm in these difficult times.
